The Friends came into being at the beginning of 2002 with the objective of raising funds for the preservation and conservation of the village church of St Mary and the Holy Cross. The Friends are a registered charity and this enables us to benefit from tax relief on Gift Aid on donations.
We use three methods of raising funds. The first is to hold public events including, for example, an annual Family Quiz and a Bangers and Beetles evening. We also organize an annual outing to a stately home and garden.
Every two years to date we have organized a concert during the summer that is held in church. The second method of fund-raising is by means of private events in people's homes such as coffee mornings, tea parties or open gardens for which those attending make a donation. The third method is to sell church-related artefacts, such as Christmas cards and tea towels illustrating the church and the associated coats of arms. We have a presence at the annual summer Church Fete and at the Christmas Breakfast at the Village Hall where sales of locally-sourced produce have been held.
Since our inception, thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we have raised more than £12,000. With these funds, we have been able to contribute to major repairs to the ceiling of the north transept, to the renovation of the stone crosses on the gables and to replace defective metal grilles that protect the stained glass windows. We have also been able to assist with more routine maintenance work, for example, tree surgery in the churchyard and electrical inspections.
The biennial concert is a major fund-raising event for the Friends and this year, 2008, it will be given by "Cantamus", a well-known group formed from some of the Stour Singers. The concert will be held in church at 7.30 pm on Saturday 7th June. We hope that the church will be full for this event which promises to be a very enjoyable way to spend a summer evening.
For information about the Friends and how to make a contribution to the important work of maintaining the fabric of the church, please telephone Mary Edwards 01789 450737 or William Lockwood 01789 450430.

The AMBLERS are an informal group of local people, mainly from Alderminster, who meet once a month to 'go for a walk in the country'. A route is chosen in advance by one or more of the walkers and will be about 5 miles in length and will end at or very near to a pub for those wishing to have a light lunch. The group meet on the Village Hall Car park at 9.30am on the third Tuesday in every month. Anyone and everyone is invited to come along and join us.
MEGA was formed to bring villagers together to enjoy talks, visits, social activities, etc.. The membership is not restricted in any way and everybody is welcome to come along to any of the meetings ..The meeting evening is the third Monday in the month and may take place in the Village Hall at 8pm depending on the format for the evening. Further details can be obtained from Gill Hudspith on 01789 450384.
This club was 10years old in 2009 and meets once a month on the second Tuesday in the Village Hall. It has a small and enthusiastic membership but operates under a high cost level as good speakers rarely charge less than £50.00 per talk, so despite making a loss last year there is still a healthy bank balance. The committee members are Anne Davies(Chair), Angela Meadows(treasurer), Jackie Trevis(Competition), Gill Hudspith (Secretary), Arthur Jenkins, David Jones and Pat Hooton. Further enquiries please to Gill Hudspith 450384.
"Stretch and Tone" is an exercise class that takes place every Wednesday morning during term time from 10am to 11am.
Everyone who wishes to tone up their muscles with gentle exercises is welcome to attend. The class is taught by Lesley Hadland who is a trained dance and exercise teacher. Lesley teaches with humour and an understanding of the limitations that occur as age advances and all those attending enjoy the sessions and feel the benefit of them. Each session costs £4.00.
